The RRWA Trail RRWA Land Use Membership Trux Another Success

The Trail in Spring (15802 bytes) THE RRWA .... in brief

Founded in 1982, the Roaring Run Watershed Association's mission is to restore land which has suffered environmental damage, and to protect unspoiled tracts from unwarranted development. We are a non-profit environmental organization registered under both Pennsylvania and Federal codes.

The watershed, near Apollo, Pennsylvania, includes both Rattling Run and Roaring Run. Waterfalls, huge boulders and tree-covered hills make the area ideal for picnics, hiking and the enjoyment of nature. With the help of state and local authorities the Association has helped to curb the pollution and dumping that was once a common practice in the area. RRWA presently owns about 652 acres of land which is open to the public all year round.
Unauthorized vehicles are not permitted on any property owned by RRWA. Violators will be prosecuted under section 3717 of the motor vehicle code. This section calls for a $500 fine for the first offense, and $1000 fine for subsequent offenses plus a 90 day suspension of operators license. This is in addition to all other charges that can be levied. For other rules and regulations see signs at trail head or click on the following link.

SOME SUCCESS STORIES:

THE PARK . . .
Derwood Beers Community ParkWe’re proud of the Derwood Beers Community Park (see map 2) with its pond, pavilion, and picnic area. Located on about four acres of land within the watershed, this land was donated to us on the condition that we would assume the responsibility for development and perpetual maintenance.

THE WOODS . . .
In July, 1993 our Association acquired an additional 62 acres of land at the mouth of Roaring Run, which we have named the “Arcadia Natural Area.” (see map 2) Since 1996 we have added 529 contiguous acres.

THE TRAIL . . .

The Watershed's most popular feature is its handicapped accessible trail which was built upon an abandoned railroad grade extending along the Kiskiminetas River upstream from Apollo. At the initial cost of about $25,000 (public and private grants and donations) we have developed one and one-half miles of trail for hiking, skiing and bicycling. In the Fall of 1998 we extended the improved portion of the trail by about one-half mile, resulting in a trail of slightly more than two miles. It is bordered by a mowed grass strip with the Kiski River on one side, a wooded hillside on the other, and rest benches at intervals. A parking lot, portable toilet, picnic area, pavillion and river access are situated at the trailhead.

The Annual Bike Race

THE FUTURE. . .
RRWA will continue to acquire and protect land from unwarranted development and / or environmental damage. Our annual fishing tournaments, educational programs, and on-going clean-up efforts assure that we will remain a significant beneficial force in the 21st Century.
